Rafael Cadenas

He was born on an April day in 1930 in Barquisimeto, a city that in the past was called Nueva Segovia. His books of poems: “Una isla” (An Island), “Los cuadernos del destierro” (The Notebooks of Banishment), “Falsas Maniobras” (False Manoeuvres), “Memorial” (Memorial), “Interperie” (Weatherworn), “Gestiones y Amante” (Management and Lover), as those in prose: “Realidad y Literatura” (Rality and Literature), “En torno al lenguaje” (On Language), “Anotaciones” (Annotations), “Dichos” (Sayings), “Apuntes sobre San Juan de la Cruz” (Notes on Saint John of the Cross), can be found in “Obra entera” (Complete Works) published by Fondo de Cultura Económica, and later by Pretextos Publishing House. He collected the translations made by himself in “El taller de al lado” (The Workshop Next Door). He is a retired professor from the School of Literature of the Universidad Central de Venezuela where he taught especially Spanish and North American Poetry. He has received the following awards: Premio Nacional de Ensayo (Essay National Award) (1984), Premio Nacional de Literatura (Literature National Award) (1985), Premio San Juan de la Cruz (Saint John of the Cross Award) (1992), Premio Internacional de Poesía J.A. Pérez Bonalde (J.A. Perez Bonalde International Poetry Award) (1992). He was also awarded with the Guggenheim Foundation Scholarship (1986). Recently he was awarded the Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances (Guadalajara International Book Fair Award of Romance Languages) previously called Juan Rulfo Award.
